Along with football, Motor racing is perhaps the most loved sport in Italy, and nowhere is it more followed than in the Emilia-Romagna region. With the production of Ferrari at Modena, and Ducati in Bologna, through to the race tracks in Imola and Misano, the region is obsessed with speed, racing, and world class competitions.

This is true also of the mountain republic of San Marino, which suffers though the disadvantage of geography. A mountain isn’t the best place in the world for a world class Moto GP circuit. This has led to the happy collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna region and the birth of the San Marino & Riviera di Rimini Moto Grand Prix.

San Marino has sponsored various race events, from the original San Marino Moto Gp in the 1980s (held at various tracks including Misano, and Muggelo), and the San Marino Formula One Grand Prix at Immola (now discontinued). The new Moto GP, started in 2007 continues this proud tradition, combined with a closer collaboration on the part of the Emilia-Romagna region.

The race weekend is spectacular, with the qualifying rounds and actual race being just part of the spectacle. There are concerts and special events organised along the coast from Rimini through to Riccione and Cattolica, as well as in Missano Adriatico itself. It’s a paradise for the motor sports enthusiast, but there’s plenty of events for the casual visitor as well.
