Update on the Abruzzo Quake

The death toll in the Abruzzo earthquake has sadly risen to 207, with rescue work continuing. Further tremors were felt throughout the day in the Abruzzo region, with a new strong quake(5.2 richter scale) occuring at roughly 8.00pm (GMT +1) this evening.

Some smaller quakes were felt in both the Umbria and Marche regions.

If you have friends or family living or travelling in the Rimini area, there’s no need to be alarmed. There were some minor tremors on Sunday night, but no structural damage done. The epicentre of the Abruzzo quake is about 300km away from Rimini. We will however keep you posted on any seismic activity in the area.

Italy’s Protezione Civile, which is co-ordinating rescue efforts have asked people to avoid travelling towards the affected area, and for those who are in the area to avoid using mobile phones except when absolutely necessary. Please limit calls to anyone in the area to emergencies as well, to ensure that the telecommunications network – which is already under obvious strain – does not get blocked up further.

We’ll be publishing details of how you can help the victims of the quake once a co-ordinated plan is published.
