Rimini's Traffic Restrictions
Rimini's historic town centre and the adjacent Borgo San Giuliano, both have traffic-limited-zones, or zones where vehicles must have a specific permission to enter, or else are subject to large fines. Many Italian cities have introduced these zones in an effort to improve the air-quality for residents and visitors.
From the first of February 2007, a new system of Electronic monitoring, which will register license plates of vehicles entering and exiting the traffic-limited-zones, will be in operation. This effectively means that, while previously one could take the chance of entering the traffic-limited-zone and hope that no traffic-warden would chance upon you, now an automatic fine is virtually guaranteed.
There are a number of categories that apply for an exemption to the system, enabling them to travel within the traffic-limited-zone:
- Vehicles of guests staying in Hotels within the traffic-limited-zone. If you're staying in a hotel in the traffic-limited-zone, your hotelier should be able to exempt your vehicle from the system.
- Vehicles registered for disabled access to the City. If you're a disabled driver, or if you are transporting a disabled passenger, your vehicle will probably be exempt from the traffic restrictions. You must register the vehicle though - forms for which are available at the following link
