Are there mosquitoes in Rimini??
Are there mosquitoes in Rimini, and if so do I need to be worried?
(James ,Dublin, Ireland)
The unfortunate answer to this is yes, there are mosquitoes throughout Italy in low-level locations, and that includes Rimini.
As a rule of thumb, the closer you are to the beach the less likely you are to suffer from mosquitoes in Rimini -if you're on the beach it's virtually unheard of to be bitten by these annoying creatures (they don't breed there, and the sea breeze puts them off apparently).
Moving in towards the city, you are likely to encounter them though. In particular during dusk and dawn - though be aware that there are also zanzare tigre or tiger mosquitoes that bite all through the daytime.
In general mosquito bites you may get in Rimini cause more irritation than any serious health risk. Obviously though there is always the risk that, as they're vectors for disease, they may pass something on to you, so protection against bites is worthwhile.
Some Tips:
- Amongst natural techniques it's believed that burning citronella candles/oil discourages the mosquito
- It has been suggested that intake of vitamin b1 may help repel mosquitoes, though there is very little scientific evidence for this.
- Air Conditioning in your hotel is one of the most effective methods for ensuring protection at night. For this to be effective you obviously need to ensure that windows and doors remain closed. Don't overdo it, though, as aggressive air-conditioning poses its own problems for your health!
- Repellents - for the moment most experts seem to be in agreement that chemical repellents are the most effective protection for you if you're wandering about an area with mosquitoes. You can go into any pharmacy and ask for ananti-zanzara, and they'll advise you. If you intend to use the repellent on children it's important that you let the pharmacist know - per i bambini means for children.
- Cover up - one simple and non-chemical method to protect yourself is to wear trousers and long-sleeved shirts.
