Federico Fellini
Federico Fellini, born in Rimini in 1920, is perhaps the town's most famous son, certainly from the twentieth century. Fellini made his mark as one of the world's greatest film directors. Starting his career in post-war Rome, along with the neo-realists like Roberto Rossellini. His substantial body of work contains many different genres, but he is perhaps best known for his surrealistic mix of fantasy, dreams, and memory. Much of his work was inspired by the places, people, and local customs of Romagna, and Rimini in particular.

Gregory of Rimini
Gregory of Rimini was an emminent Augustinian theologian in the 1300's.Born in Rimini, after his studies he became rector of the Augustinian seminary in Rimini, before going on to the Sorbonne. Involved in the key theological debates of his day, he was labelled Infantium Tortor (Torturer of children) due to his hardline on the fate of unbaptized children.Read more about Gregory of Rimini »»

Sigismondo Malatesta
Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, born in Brescia in 1417, the illegitimate son of Pandolfo Malatesta - a condottiero or mercenary. Sigismondo followed in his father's footsteps, fighting alongside his brothers to gain control of Rimini, Cesena, and Fano. When his brother abdicated, Sigismondo became Lord of Rimini at the tender age of 14. Sigismondo was one of the more colourful characters, of a colourful period of history. He fought with and against various popes, was accused of murdering two of his wives, and at the same time was patron of the arts and an accomplished poet.

Guido Cagnacci
Guido Cagnacci was not technically Riminesi, born as he was in nearby Santarcangelo di Romagna, but its proximity, coupled with the fact that Cagnacci produced much of his work in Rimini, gives him 'honorary' status. Cagnacci, a pupil of Guido Reni, studied in both Rome, and Bologna, returning to work in Rimini between 1627 and 1642. In 1648 he moved to Vienna, and is credited with helping to bring the new baroque style to German-speaking Europe.

Romeo Neri
Rimini's football stadium is named after one of the town's most famous athletes. Neri, born in Rimini, was an olympic gymnast, who won two medals in the Los Angeles games of 1932.
